If you own a newer Canon SLR, you have several choices of lens brands that you can buy for your camera. In addition to buying Canon brand lenses that work with the automatic focus of modern Canon’s, you can buy lenses from third party vendors such as Sigma and Tamron, who make Canon-compatible lenses for less cost than Canon. After having spent a large amount of money on the camera body, you may be asking yourself if it is worth spending the extra bucks for the brand name lens as well. I am an amateur photographer, so am certainly no expert, but from the day that I bought my Canon SLR with its brand name lenses you could see a marked jump in improvement in my photo albums. It is like someone focused everything and turned on the lights! I recently switched to a digital Canon and gave my six-year-old film Canon to my mother. Her photos showed the same amazing improvement.

Reasons to Buy the Canon Lens

I generally like to stick to matching brand names with brand names, and my research has shown that most people on the web agree that doing so with Canon lenses is worth it. The first reason for the popularity of this Canon lens is image quality. Canon lenses are well-corrected for distortion, and have excellent color fidelity and contrast. In addition, they are characterized by superior lens construction. Canon lenses are the choice of many imaging professionals the world over, whether those lenses are being used on EOS SLR cameras or on broadcast cameras.

Canon Lens Critics

As with any product, Canon lenses have their critics. For example, I found one person who felt that on the Canon lens the auto focus seemed slower than and not as decisive as the other lenses they had owned, especially in low light.

Canon Lens Facts and Benefits

Lenses are extremely complex and sensitive pieces of equipment in which a myriad of problems can occur. Canon lenses are adjusted through the camera body with no on-lens control. All modern Canon lenses focus with a motor in the lens, which may be one of the main reasons my mother and I got such great photos. If you are near-sighted, this is an especially nice feature since it is difficult to focus manually if you wear glasses.

Used Canon Lenses

Another great reason to invest in the higher priced Canon brand lens is that camera lenses tend to hold their monetary value over time, while camera bodies do not. I have bought both a used Canon lens and a new Canon lens for work and home and, frankly, I could not tell any difference other than the price.

Upgraded from 50D to 5Dmkii

I was scared to spend the money but when i received the camera i was pretty sure i had made the right decision. The menu system is very similar to the 50D so i was able to start making custom settings instantly. The ‘bulb’ setting is a welcome feature compared to the 50 and as is the 3 custom settings instead of 2. Image quality is awesome along with the full frame sensor to bring out the best of my L series lenses. Take the time to sign on to the canon registration since you get extra perks as a 5D owner.

I love my EOS 5D Mark II

This is a great camera. The buttons can be a bit confusing, but I’m just getting use to them. The camera feels good in my hands - solid, substantial. The LCD on the back of the camera is large, bright, and clear. The various menus make life easier. I highly recommend this product. I’ve been using a Canon T90 film SLR since 1986 and if the 5D Mark II performs half as well I’ll be delighted.

Nikon Guy forced to go to Canon for resolution

I’m doing a large scale documentation project photographing objects on a copy stand. Was pretty sure I was going to use Nikon bodies as thats what I’m familiar with. I tested several bodies and it came down to a 5d MkII or a D3. I’vee never been a pixel peeper but it was clear that that the added resolution with the 5D made a big difference and it was too ignore. Also it comes with the software you need to tether the camera which is nice. My biggest complaint is the ergonomics, big and clunky. Luckily I don’t have to handle too much, because I definitely think Nikons are better in this regard. Also Canon’s RAW format is less proprietary than Nikon’s which does make a big difference to me.

I traded up from a nikon d100 and its been great. a little trouble at first. a very expensive long lens i bought was out of adjustment and vinnetting. it took me a little while to figure out and i sent it back. they broke it down and re-installed the elements and its been fine ever since. news photography - aerial photography - artwork. no problems with extreme cold (15F soaked) , moisture, heat or heavy use. with a 1.4 lens its almost like night vision. stuff that i can barely see well enough to focus comes out well lit and not blurred while handheld. BTW i don’t recommend a nikon.

The only camera you will ever need

I purchased this when it first became available a few years ago and loved it. I sold it a few months ago because I had convinced myself that it was more then I needed. After trying a 30D and a 5D, I sold them both and purchased another 1DS MARK II. When you own the best, you just can’t settle for anything else. The absolute only feature I wish this had is the sensor shake to remove dust like the new models have. Other then that, this is the perfect digital camera. Do yourself a favor and use a high quality lens with it. The best deserves the best.

The camera to have…

As a photo gear junkie, I seem to go through cameras quickly. I buy - use - sell - upgrade… over and over and over. I have used the original digital rebel, the 20D, the 1DMarkIIN, and now the 1dsMKII. 

I was originally hesitant to drop the significant chunk of change required to own this product. Especially in the middle of a period of rumors circulating that the next evolution of the 1ds was coming soon. However - it was well worth the money. 

I shoot model based images primarly… so I need something that is portable, rugged, and wont die on me - on location. 

The battery lasts 8+ hours per charge - and charges incredibly quickly. I bought a spare… but I have only used it on travel weekends when I am away from a power supply for 2-3 days. 

Its rugged. There is nothing like the pro-series bodied by Canon. I have taken this camera out in the cold and snow - and in pretty heavy rain - and because of its weather sealing - it worked like a charm. 

Noise… this camera can shoot at H - which is the equivalent of ISO 3200. If you need to get the shot - and are in almost pitch black conditions - this baby can handle it. It will be grainy - but its a lot better than almost all of the other cameras out there. (I hear rumors that the 5D is better with LESS grain than this camera)… but then again - this is 16.7 megapixels. 

The amount of megapixels is phenominal… 16.7 - allows you to shoot a person and see all of their nosehair. While that may not sound flattering (and its not) - it means that with good glass this baby can capture even the subtlest of details. 

Last cool point… the dynamic range. 

You figure more digital cameras have a dynamic range of 5-7 stops. Film - 7-9 stops… This has got to have closer to 9 stops and is the BEST I have seen in a digital camera. I just recently got a medium format digital back - and that has 13 stops of dynamic range… but the 1dsmkii comes a heck of a lot closer to that without having to shell out 30k.

makes disposables obsolete!

Ive gotten used to the disposable kodaks i got from the checkout isle at walmart. The problem with those, though, is that they run out of pictures pretty quick. The last straw was when we ran out of film at the family reunion just as cousin billy was about to show us how to catch a lizard with a rubber band and a twinky. At that point I knew I needed an upgrade. 

I ordered the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II the next day, for [...] The feature that first caught my attention was the powerful zoom. Now when I take a family picture, I like to step back about a mile or two, then zoom in and snap that high-resolution masterpeice. My wife always complains that i zoom too close into the big pores on her nose, to which i respond by suggesting she use clean and clear pore cleansing strips (watch for her upcoming review of those soon). 

Another useful feature of this camera is the continuous shooting mode. This is where the camera automatically takes pictures in rapid succession, about 5 per second. The other day I set the camera on the dresser, turned on the macarena, and got wild. I then took the individual pictures and strung them together into an animated flipbook. Now watching myself do the macarena is a mere flip of the book away. Man i can dance. 

To summarize, you will have a lot of fun with this cam like i did. Definitely worth the [...] ! But remember, there is a [...] that comes with it; so make sure you fill in the item number clearly on the [...] card, and make sure you stay within the space alloted on the form otherwise the [...] wont go through.

First, the Canon 1Ds Mark II is an awesome professional camera. 

This review is about the completely misleading Amazon offer of 42% off. This is the biggest joke imaginable. The Amazon website shows the list price as $11,999.99. When Canon launched this camera the MSRP wasn’t that high. It was $7,999. Methinks someone with a calculator got carried away. 

Anyway, after adding it to my cart to see the unbelievable low price it turns out its within about $100 of what every other reputable online shop is selling it for. 

I expected more from Amazon. This behavior is reprehensible.

Originally it was a little ‘history. We had the Nikon D40 for a while ‘and loved it. 6 megapixels is more than enough, and lasted about great images. Now, when a friend who feels the need to find the latest technology and get the best deals, I found a XSI Canon’s excellent price and jumped in head first. I immediately sold the D40, and we went a few months of pain with Canon. The images are blurry, color, and even if the warranty service, it still had its problems. So when Nikon D5000 arrived, I updated again … and could not be happier! 

D5000 is a D40/D60 natural regeneration because it gives more power, more than megapixels (not important), videos, and best of all, an excellent low-light shots. But you have to buy their AF-S autofocus as the camera is not integrated, but there is so much available at this stage, not a big problem. 
Swivel LCD screen behind it is also very useful for making difficult shots … Trust me, you can use it. This also provides an additional bonus to help protect the screen, you can turn around when the camera is not allowed. 

The menus have also received a major update in this generation, and is very easy to use IMHO. Less clutter = better! 

The wolf alone with the camera has the same attack is that all digital SLRs, is great. Slightly larger than the D40, but smaller than the D90. Honestly, I can not wait Micro Four Thirds cameras, prices fall, but until then I will feel free to use D5000 and enjoy a good wherever I go.

Great Purchase

I bought this for myself as a birthday present. I’d used a Nikon CoolPix for many years, and decided to upgrade to a DSLR. I’ve always liked Nikons, but I have used my mom’s Olympus DSLR and really liked the extra features and manual capabilities. I’d researched the D5000, D3000 and comparable Cannon cameras. In the end, I liked the quality of the Nikon’s photos based on side-by-side comparisons. I’ve only had it for a little over a month, but my shots are so much better. I’ve got a good eye as far as my subject is concerned, but I was frustrated with the quality of my older camera. Now I see things I never saw before! The shutter speed is incredible. I haven’t had a chance to use all of the features, but even on the automatic setting, the image quality is so much better. I will update this review after I’ve had a chance to use it more. 

I received my camera earlier than forecasted and was very happy. I didn’t have to wait the 10 days to receive my camera. Overall, I’m a pretty happy customer.

What a Camera!!

We’re talking about one of the greatest cameras of all time. 
The image quality is awesome, very easy to use, I can take it wherever I go, whenever I want because is compact and doesn’t require much space.. and it looks like I’ve been taking photos my whole life because of the great pics you can do with the Nikon D5000. 
I also got the Nikon case and the Nikon School DVD for this camera and it was a very helpful purchase. It only takes one hour to see de video and learn a lot of the camera. It has a long list of useful tips for every automatic mode, and some for the manual and advanced modes, so you can understand the functions and all the things you can do the Nikon D5000. 
I’m really happy with my camera.. Now I’m looking forward to get the 55-200 mm Nikkor Lens and some other accesories.. 

My First Nikon

i have been using this camera for little while now and all i can say is i couldn’t be more happy its great camera it takes beautiful pictures and its so easy to use a child can do it if you are new to digital camera i would highly recommend this camera i also have canon rebel XSI they are about same price and they both take great pictures as consumer i would like this because its very easy to use and if you don’t know what this button dose press help and it tells you what it dose its so cool its best camera i have ever owned and i am sold on Nikon Live View is OK its very slow to focus and in movie mode it doesn’t auto focus but i didn’t but this camera for video i bought to take a great pictures and it does that remarkably i would recommend this camera if you are looking to buy one

I bought this camera as a gift, and used it very little myself, but it is incredibly easy to use, and understand in the little time i had it in my hands, it is obviously a camera not for point and shoot, but for professional picture taking, however i would have to add to this I suppose when i hear from the owner of this camera!

Another question I often am asked is, “What should I buy for my photography business” as well as “In what order should I buy my equipment”

Here’s what I’ve found to be the best order when considering what you buy to grow my business and provide the highest level of service to our customers.

Starters

When you’re launching your business, there are really five main components you need:

1. An SLR Camera - depending on your budget, you can either start with a lower-level SLR, a mid-ranged SLR, or even a used SLR. But, do your research - find the brand you like and stick with it!

2. 1 Good SLR Lens (17-85mm) - get a good - middle of the road SLR lens made by the manufacturer of the camera. Granted, they will be a bit more expensive, but it’s worth the investment

3. An Adjustable Flash - spend the extra money on a good flash - having something with some power and versatility will really take your photos up a notch

4. Get adobe Photoshop - Photoshop is the top of the line, industry leading photo editing software. It’s pricey, but its worth it. If you can’t afford the full blown version, start with Photoshop Elements

5. Accessories - Make sure to have a few extra batteries, memory cards and cleaning supplies. They’re all pretty cheap, but not having a backup when you need it can be catastrophic.

Building Redundancy

Once you’ve gotten the basics and money allows for you to begin to expand, start to build in a little safety net by purchasing the following. Here’s what I suggest:

1. A Second Camera Body - having a second body can be very useful in some settings, and even more importantly, if something were to fail on a camera (which has happened to me more than once) you have a backup there to save the day.

2. A Super Telephoto Lens (75-300mm) - this is the next logical step. It can come in handy for outdoor settings where you might need to have that extra zoom capability.

3. An F2.8 Lens (24-70mm) - Fast lenses (F2.8 and below) are great for indoor shooting. They capture much more light, allowing you more creative room to work

Specializing

As money allows, there are lots of great tools you can purchase for your needs:

1. Super Telephoto F2.8 (70-200mm)- this lens is great for wedding photography - it allows you to be at a distance, but still capture detail, even in low light settings. But beware, these can be pretty Pricey.

2. Super Super Telephoto Lens (100-400mm) - if you’re looking into nature or sports photography, one of these lenses is an awesome addition to your quiver. It allows you to get in tight, even from great distances - again, expanding your capabilities

3. Tilt Shift Lens (24mm) - If you are looking to get into commercial or architectural photography, a tilt shift lens, which allows you to bend the perspective, is a great tool!

As I have never owned let alone used an DSLR this is of course a masterpiece of camera, amazing pictures, amazing quality, amazing everything. 

The only thing i wish it had was a little more features, my Canon A590 IS has a little more features than the XTi but other than that it is an amazing item for an amazing price!

I have owned this camera for over two years. It was an upgrade from a point and click camera. I will never go back to the point and click. I do not have any camera of this quality to compare it to. It has been easy to learn to use. What I like most is the ability to control everything manually. The clarity of the photos are great. I have been able to blow them up and maintain the clarity of the photo.

At the time I purchased this camera the thinking was to have a nice entry level DSLR for vactions and family, just to see if this is the route I would go, after all the (PAS) point and shoot of today are very, very good and cheaper by the day! The first images with a “kit” lens, and I was let down by what I shot, not much better then PAS, you can make adjustments in PS3 and it is much improved, until one day I picked up a 70-200 2.8 L series lens for sports and I must say it had a instant “WOW effect! the images I captured were TACK SHARP! magizine quailty without touch up in PS! it began a whole new era in photograpy for me, from that experience I went and purchased the 17-40 L and once again “WOW” untouched images ready for SI, Now let it be known that the Rebel has been nick named by so-called photo snobs as the “Soccer Mom Camera” but no issue on my end, my images are much sharper! Since my Rebel the photo fever has taken off I now have two other higher end DSLR’s on of them being a Nikon, for sports these shoot 6 FPS double the Rebel (and double the price) and still the Rebel images are right there with the pro end cameras.

Perfect for the price

As it goes with cameras, it’s usualy more about the photographer than the camera. This camera is fantastic for it’s price range, and it can perform with much more expensive cameras in many instances with a small amount of know-how. When it comes to dslr cameras you can’t go wrong with a canon. It’s a pity though that this model has no hard drive, so it’s not possible to take video clips…which would’ve been nice

Great for travel

I love this camera!!! I noticed many people saying the same in all the comments I read, and after purchasing the camera and using it for the past 3 months I absolutely agree with them all. I LOVE this camera! Its easy to operate (especially for a beginner as myself) and light enough for people transitioning from a point-&-shoot camera. The sensor cleaning is very helpful (particularly when one travels to areas where there are a lot of dirt roads). The software that comes along with the camera kit is also easy to use and a great organizational tool. 
Now I need to look for a new lens, the one that comes with the kit does not have a far enough range for me, and you will definitely need more if you travel much. 
Cameta Camera was super fast in shipping the camera so a big thumbs up for them.

I want to buy a Canon EOS 1000D SLR camera. Where is it cheaper to buy - Houston or Chicago? I’m visiting both from overseas. Is there a difference in sales tax in both cities?

Sigma announces the development of a 14 megapixel high definition digital camera, packing the full spec of a DSLR into the body of a compact camera.

The Sigma Corporation is pleased to announce the new Sigma DP2 compact digital camera featuring a 14 megapixel FOVEON X3 direct image sensor (2,652 Ã? 1,768 Ã? 3 layers) as used in the Sigma SD14 digital SLR.

Sigma introduced the DP1 with a direct image sensor as used in the Sigma SD14 digital SLR to the market in March 2008 as a “unique, groundbreaking, compact digital camera with all the power of a digital SLR”. The multi award winning DP1 has established strong support from a wide range of photographers both amateur and professional.

Building on this success, the DP2 is equipped with a 24.2mm F2.8 lens, equivalent to 41mm on a 35mm SLR camera, for increasing creative possibilities and superior image quality, improving handling and performance

Main features

SLR-sized image sensor
The size of the image sensor used in the DP2 camera is 20.7mm x 13.8mm. It is approximately seven to twelve times larger than the 1/1.8inch to 1/2.5inch image sensors used in ordinary compact digital cameras.

The pixel size of the image sensor is 7.8μm. The large photodiodes deployed at a large pixel pitch capture pure, rich light efficiently and give the DP2 its high resolution and richly-graduated tones.

Full-color image sensor
The DP2 uses the same 14 megapixel (2,652Ã?1,768Ã?3 layers) direct image sensor as the SD14 and DP1.
Utilizing the special features of silicon, which is penetrated to different depths by different wavelengths of light, this direct image sensor succeeds in full-color capture with the full RGB in a single-pixel location.

Since the moiré is not generated, use of a low-pass filter is not needed because full information of light and color can be captured with three-dimensional feeling.

“TRUE II” image processing engine
The DP2 incorporates “TRUE II” which is an improved version of “TRUE” (Three-layer Responsive Ultimate Engine), the world’s first image processing engine suited for the three silicon embedded layer direct image sensor.

The unique image-processing algorithm, which has been developed throughout the development of the SD series digital SLR cameras and DP1, is incorporated into “TRUE II”.

24.2mm F2.8 lens designed exclusively for the DP2
The DP2 is equipped with a 24.2mm F2.8 lens, equivalent to 41mm on a 35mm SLR camera, which has been designed exclusively for DP2. Two molded glass aspherical lenses provide superior image quality. The Super Multi Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting. This lens and SLR-sized image sensor combination provides natural shallow depth-of-field and attractive bokeh effect.

RAW format recording
The DP2 includes a RAW recording mode for retaining full image capture detail of the utmost quality plus a JPEG recording format for convenience. The RAW data format uses lossless compression for more compact, yet uncompromised, data files. The RAW data format of the DP2 keeps brightness and color data in a 1:1 ratio without relying on interpolation. Each pixel location captures the full color of RGB data which, when processed in Sigma Photo Pro, will preserve the balance of the natural data for the best photos with the best image quality.

Exclusive Sigma Photo Pro Software (Supplied with the DP2)
The DP2 comes complete with SIGMA Photo Pro software, a RAW image developer that converts all RAW data quickly and easily. Adjustments can be made in three separate modes. The X3F Mode stores the original settings of the image at the point of capture. In the Auto Adjustment Mode, the software analyzes and automatically makes adjustments to the RAW data. The Custom Mode allows the photographer to make individual adjustments. The photographer can make changes easily and quickly by simply adjusting the slider controls within the software.

Compact and lightweight body
The DP2 has compact dimensions of 113.3mm/4.5in (W) x 59.5mm/2.3in (H) x 54.6mm/2.1in (D). Its compact body and lightweight design makes it easy to carry everywhere.

Three metering modes and four exposure modes
The DP2 has three metering modes, Evaluative Metering, Center Weighted Average Metering and Spot Metering. It is also possible to select the exposure mode from Program AE, Shutter Priority AE, Aperture Priority AE or Manual.
Exposure compensation can be set in 1/3 stop increments from +3.0 to -3.0 stops and an auto bracketing function is also available.

I am about to start college and my camera will definitely play a big role in my degree.. I love taking pictures, but always get frustrated with blurry pictures mostly with moving subjects (like in sports pics).. I also take lots of macro pics and need a camera+lens that would be with both of these sorts of pics, as well of course, other normal and arty pictures.. indoor pics would be good too.. What Camera/lens combination would anyone suggest.. Budget is okay.. but not limitless.. Reasonable for fairly new SLR user but quick learner who needs it to be good.. Any help much appreciated..
