Don’t expect a Mercedes for the price of a Hyundai- great lens for the price!!
I bought this nikkor lens to complement the 18-55mm lens that came with my D50. The people who criticize this lens certainly have the right to their opinions but I don’t feel they are keeping the price of the lens in perspective while reviewing the lens. One can spend thousands of dollars on a single Nikon lens. And to me, the fact that I can get a nikon dx lens with great optics that’s a little slow but is incredibly light for under $200 is nothing short of miraculous. If you would have told someone in 1968 that a lens of this quality would be available for such a low price, they would have laughed. Nikon is indeed the king of making lenses and they had made a lens that allows those that are beginners or who can’t afford incredibly high priced lenses the ability to step into a very nice range lens with great optics for a pittance of what professional lenses cost. So what if it’s a little slow? If I had the money, I guess I’d be spending $1500 on every lens but the fact is I don’t have those resources and appreciate Nikon opening the door and letting me in on the fun too at a very reasonable price for a very reasonable quality lens. For those that dislike this nikon nikkor lens, take it back and get a truly great lens for 10 times the price- they’re available- no ones’ stopping you- so why knock this lens down so badly? It services a certain market- those of us who want nice pictures but can’t afford super fast super expensive lenses. These lenses are what they are. Quit all the whining and either just enjoy the lens for what it can do considering it’s very low price or go out and buy that expensive lens that does everything you want it to. The super lenses are there for the buying. It’s Not like they’re not available and this is the only lens out there and Nikon is charging $700 dollars for it. I could understand some whining then. I got this 55 200mm lens on sale for $140. That’s incredible. Enjoy this lens for all that it can do for such a reasonable price!

Incredible telephoto zoom 200mm lens
Just got this lens for my Nikon D50, which I bought because it is smaller and lighter than the D70s. This lens is amazing; it’s the same size as the D50 kit lens (18mm-55mm zoom) and the same weight. For someone like me who values carrying around the least weight possible, this is exactly the right lens. And from the test shots I’ve made it looks to be plenty sharp enough for my taste. Autofocus is fast and silent. It amazes me that Nikon lens technology has progressed so much to produce such a lightweight and quality lens.

Good, basic utility lens
I bought a Nikon D70s body only and put together a range of coverage from 10mm through 500mm including the 55-200mm Autofocus Nikkor Zoom. It is, as most of the DX lenses, a plastic based barrel and is light enough to travel and easy to hand hold in most lighting situations. Although I have not had the lens that long, it seems to be fast focusing and sharp optically. If it holds up as well as it appears from other reviews I have read, the price makes it a good general usage lens. The plastic construction should not be held as a negative as it seems to be sturdy nonetheless. The manual/autofocus switch is easy to use and the lens shade bayonets in and also stores reversed by bayoneting as well. The mount is plastic but, unless you abuse your equipment, seems to seat well and does not appear to be a negative factor.

Great lens for the price
If you have the 18-55mm kit lens, then you’ll find that the da 50-200mm feels just about the same. This lens 200mm is slightly heavier and slightly longer than the 18-55mm, but still very easy to handle. I uploaded two images to the user gallery above, showing the 18-55mm next to the 50-200mm.

Most people seem to decide between this zoom 200mm lens or the Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6, which is similarly priced. After doing a lot of research, I decided on the Pentax 50-200mm because of its compact size and much lighter weight. Although I haven’t used the Tamron lens myself, the specifications show that it is longer and twice as heavy as the Pentax.

Another thing to consider is that the Tamron AF70-300mm has a 62mm filter diameter, while the Pentax DA 50-200mm and DA 18-55mm share the same 52mm filter diameter. If you already own the 18-55mm kit lens, you’ll be able to use any filters that you already have on the 50-200mm. In my experience, larger filters also cost a bit more, so sticking with 52mm filters would mean cheaper filters that you can also share between lenses.

If you’ve never used a telephoto lens like this one (and I hadn’t), then you’ll find that slight movements are really exaggerated when you’re fully zoomed in. Also, at 200mm, the widest aperture setting is f5.6 (smaller f-number means a bigger aperture), which is fine if you’re outdoors and there’s plenty of light, but can make indoor/low light photography a bit difficult. Shake reduction will definitely help, but you’ll probably want a tripod if you’re shooting at 200mm in low light.

Keep in mind that the Pentax DSLRs like the K100D have a 1.5x focal length multiplier. This means that you need to multiply the specified focal lengths of the lenses by 1.5 to get their 35mm SLR equivalent. On a digital SLR, this lens will give you the equivalent of 75-300mm on a regular 35mm SLR camera. Overall, this is a great lens for the price.

Nice, small telephoto lens
This 50-200 is the best in its class for any Pentax digital SLR. It’s very small, light weight, internal focusing, and allows on demand manual focusing. If you haven’t purchased your K100D yet, you can probably find this in a two lens kit at a nice little discount.

The “on demand” manual focus (also on the kit 18-55), allows you to instantly teak the focus after the autofocus has locked on the subject. This is very handy, as the camera may pick a person’s shoulder rather than eyes on which to focus, etc. A very effecient lens hood is also included.

If you already have one of the digital SLR Pentax cameras, and if size is not critical, you might consider a long focal length lens. Pentax doesn’t really have a good option (as of this writing); therefore, I’d recommend the Tamron 70-300 LD Di zoom. It’ll give you 50% more range, a 1:2 lifesize close-up mode, and a 6 year USA warranty (vs. 1 year from Pentax). This brand new design features Low-Dispersion glass and is designed to work better than previous designs with digital sensors.

Exciting Lens from Pentax
I found this lens to be of very high quality. Small, light, and well built. Love the fast focus capabilities and the quick shift focus that takes you to manual from auto with just a twist of the focus ring. Color and contrast are good. Great lens for the price I paid on Amazon. I’ve had tons of fun with this versatile Pentax lens on my *ist DS. I highly recommend this lens to all digital *ist owners. Pentax DA 50-200 mm Lens,

The lens is doing just what I wanted. Will be using it alot more this summer. Love not having to manually adjust the camera. Quickly found I didn’t like using the manual lenses from my old Pentax film camera on the SLR Pentax K200D body I had ordered a couple of months before.

Lens pentax telephoto,

I haven’t had adequate time to use produ ct to give it a proper review. I have used it a couple of times and it works as expected. I believe for the price it was a excellent purchase and would recommend it to anybody interested in a telephoto. Shop and compare and I believe you will agree.

Lens 200mm

As advertised. The lens works great! It  gave me the range I was looking for at a price I could could live with. I would recommend the lens for anyone with a Pentax camera if they were needing the 50-200mm range. I get good sharp clear pictures and the color definition is as good as with the 18-55mm that came with the Pentax ist ds when I purchased it.

I’m happy I chose this EF USM instead of the alternate EF-S

I needed to replace the lens on my Canon Rebel XT D-SLR. The EF-S on first glance seemed like the perfect replacement since Canon produced the EF-S series specifically for the compressed sensor D-SLR line. After weighing the pros and cons of the two, I chose this ef 28-105mm usm lens largely on the basis of price. It was the right choice, and I haven’t found any loss of features or quality.

Multiplying the range by 1.6 for a 35mm equivalence (if you have a Rebel XT, 20D or 30D), this 105mm lens is really just a slightly wide angle to stronger telephoto zoom. (about 45mm-170mm if it was a 35mm film camera) If this range suits you, then this lens is an excellent value over a EF-S wide-angle/telephoto zoom. You’ll keep all of the features, save money and have a faster lens.

The EF Lens meshes well with the current line of Canon digital SLRs. In addition, unlike the EF-S series, they are compatible with all of the Canon EOS products including higher-end cameras like the Mark II.

SPECIFIC OBSERVATIONS FROM WEEKS OF USE:
My first concern before purchasing this lens was the MINIMUM FOCUS DISTANCE of 0.5 meters, or approximately 18 inches. I do a lot of macro work transferring images into digital, so I was a tad worried. However, after getting the lens and zooming in, I realized that the focusing distance wasn’t really an issue after all. In most cases, I could manage to stand six or so inches further away and still get a highly magnified shot. So that you can see that the macro function works well, I’ve uploaded an image of a small hamster photographed at 102mm.

My second concern was lens QUALITY AND SHARPNESS, particularly in the wide-angle setting near the edges of the photo. This lens exceeded my expectations. So that you can see the quality of this EF zoom lens, I’ve uploaded an uncropped picture of the SF Bay Bridge taken at the 28mm wide-angle setting. You’ll see that the photo is sharp all the way through the edges of the frame. (it is a web-sized jpeg, so you should take that into consideration and use it mainly to see the sharpness of the photo, particularly near the outside edges)

I did get an unexpected bonus with this ef 28-105mm lens. The MANUAL FOCUS ring is in the front. I love it. Disabling the auto-focus is a snap, and the position and feel of the manual focus is perfect for sports or social activities where the subject is often not the closest object. The ring itself is ridged and made of rubber, making handling a breeze.

While I hadn’t expected to replace my stock lens so soon, I think it ended up for the best. This lens is actually superior to the one that came with the XT. I lost some wide-angle function but gained much more telephoto. The price is excellent and the quality of the lens is high.

Versatile and quick
I am very satisfied with the overall performance of canon 105mm. It focuses instantly and silently. USM is definitely an advantage and that was one of the reasons why I preferred Canon over other brands. The high pitched sound associated with focusing becomes quite irritating even at occasions when you do not need a silent operation. With a USM lens you do not hear anything and this is really fascinating. This lens produces very clear photos and is definitely better than the Canon EF 28-90 lens which is usually sold with the body for three reasons: 1. The grip feels much better. 2. The lens provides a larger aperture at longer focal lenghts. 3. Basically it has a focal length of 28-105 mm (vs 28-90). Even if there is a significant price difference I would suggest the 28-105 mm. You will NOT regret it.

Great ef camera lens, especially for the very low price,* Very sharp across the image, even wide open.
* Low Chroma. I read a test ([...]) that found higher than normal amounts of CA in this canon 55mm lens at some apertures, but I don’t see it. My standard test is to shoot bare tree limbs on bright sunny days & look for purple fringing, especially at the edges. I’m not seeing anywhere near the level of fringing shown in some of their test shots.If anything, I’d call it “low” I read elsewhere that one of Canon’s goals in adding the aspherical element to this ef-s 18-55mm lens was to reduce CA, so I’m thinking maybe the lens tested in photozon.de was just a bad apple.
* Image Shake control works. I can’t attest to how often it provides a full 4 stops worth of shake reduction, but I can see a very clear result when using it.
* Fast accurate focusing. One of the reasons I purchased this lens was because I was dissatisfied with the performance of my (more expensive) Sigma 17-35 EX (the newer model), which while sharp, is just too slow and inaccurate a focuser for close work in action sports. The new Canon solved that problem.
* Compact, light weight & unobtrusive. Not much bigger than a normal lens.
CONS
* Barrel Distortion at 18mm (28mm) While not exsessive for an inexpensive lens, this is one area where you will see benefit from spending hundreds of dollars for a much more expensive Canon “IS” or “L,” or buying a fixed focal length lens. In most real world situations, it wasn’t all that noticeable. I could usually correct for it in Photoshop, but this is not a lens for critical architectural work etc. I have taken hundreds of photos with this lens and barrel distortion has only called attention to itself a few times. I suspect this is one price paid for the very compact design.
* Not very fast. Another area where an “L” has an edge. At F3.5 28mm equivalent and F5.6 85mm this ef zoom lens is relatively slow compared to a pro lens. This effects stopping the action in low light. OTH, you will have to spend hundreds more to get a usable top speed of F 2.8 and that is *only* one stop faster at 28mm equiv. I think both this lens’ sharpness and the IS system mitigate this “Con.” It took me a while to learn that I could shoot wide open at all focal lengths without having the outer third of the image turn to mush.That’s pretty amazing for a zoom at this price. You don’t have a stop or two you almost never use because it is too soft. And the IS system works well in low light, though that doesn’t figure in in stopping the action.
* Does not have that red stripe. Sad to say, some will never buy this sharp, handy little lens because in is not an “L” and/or doesn’t cost $[...]. Yes, it does does look a little “plasticy,” probably doesn’t have the build quality for heavy, everyday use by a real working pro, and does not look massive mounted on your camera body, like a “fast” pro lens that’s squeezing out that last F stop. But IMO, it looks very similar to Canon’s newer IS lenses, so there is no scarlet letter immediately identifying you as “cheap.” In other words, “Get over it.”

So, why did Canon produce such a good lens at such a bargain price? I’d say that it’s because Nikon announced their intention to do the same a little while ago. Also, Canon’s old non IS 18-55mm lens had the rep of being something of a dog. Finally, several competing cameras now have IS built into the body. Canon had to respond with a sharp IS lens that they could put on the Rebels & the 40D. In terms of sales, the low end of the digital ef market is both hot and very competitive. We’re the beneficiaries.

Not a professional photographer,

I know nothing about ISO, shutter speeds, Ring lag etc…I’m so not a professional Photographer far from it. I just set my Canon Rebel to Auto and push the button.

But what I do know is I have a canon 55mm-250mm lens (which cost way More then the canon ef-s 18-55mm) and the 250mm is better at getting far far away shots. But not so great on up close birthday pictures and fast action baseball shots. Were the 18mm-55mm is!!

I use my 18mm-55mm almost all the time. I only pull the 250mm lens out when I have to shot something really far away which isn’t often. I like that the 18mm-55mm is smaller and auto focus is faster compare to the 250mm lens.

When I download my s 18-55mm ef lens pics of my son’s baseball game to his team web page and get emails asking me “who was the photographer that took those great pictures??” me a photographer!! That is all that needs to be said about this lens!!

I don’t think it feels cheap and I don’t care if ISO are slow, etc.. that other reviews complain about. With my 18-55mm lens I get a prefect picture every time, I have never been Disappointed (with my 250mm I have been).

I wonder if maybe some of the people who have trouble with this lens is because you need to leave the ISO and speed alone and just let the camera do all the work; try auto once and awhile. Because I have no problems with getting prefect pictures every time I use auto setting with this lens.

CANON 75-300mm Telephoto Lens
The ordering and delivery of the lens was uneventful. The lens works but requires more manual adjustment in auto mode than it should. The lens focal adjustment does not slide a smoothly as my other lenses. I will have it looked at to see if it can be lubricated or determine what the reason is for this jerky adjustment. It seems as if the Zoom mechanism has dried out or is contaminated.

Great lens for a good value - use a tri- or mono-pod though
The Canon EF75-300 is a good lens for the price. Canon quality is really good, and pictures taken turn out great if you have used a tripod or monopod to hold the camera steady. I will say if you don't frequently have something to steady the camera on, it will be hard to keep distance shots crisply in focus. The extra cost of the IS lenses (image stabilization) is a lot to bear, but may mean the difference between a great shot and a missed opportunity.

Great Second Lens
We needed another lens for some better zoom shots. One big question I had, that I could not find a definitive answer for was "Will this work with my Digital SLR" the answer is yes.

Keep in mind the price. This is for the novice mid-level photographer. If you are a professional, then I would think you'd be buying a higher end lens.

Things to remember is that this is a zoom lens. You must be at least 4ft from your object. You'll be fine shooting your kid's soccer match but don't expect the same results for high action sporting shots (remember the price)

Overall we have found this a good step in our photography arsenal. Additional purchases we've made are a set of lens cap holders and getting ready to buy a bag to hold all of our gear to include the tripod.

Sigma 18-250mm lens
I have had this a few weeks, I purchased it for its range as I am shooting a friends wedding next month. Thus far I have found its range a tremendous benefit for indoor group events.

It was fun until...
I got my lens last week and I had lots of fun with it, until I noticed the AF started getting buggy. After turning on for a few minutes it would work fine but then I noticed that when I was focused on something far and tried to focus on something closer, the AF would get jammed or something. I had to nudge the focus ring a little bit for my camera to take the picture. I'm sure switching it to manual focus would have worked, but I don't want to use that for the rest of my time with the lens. I tried it on my brother's D80, and still the same problem so I'm sure it wasn't my camera. I decided on returning the lens and I'm deciding on whether I should by the Nikkor 18-200 or the 18-135 and the 35mm f/1.8 af-s. I'm pretty sure I had a bad copy of the lens, but it's because of this I'm going to stick with Nikon lenses from now on. I know Sigma makes good lenses, but I switched from the Sigma 18-200, then went to the 18-250. I'm pretty sure I'm going to grab myself the Nikkor 18-200. Oh I'm an amateur photographer using a D40, and I liked the pictures that were produced. Not super sharp, but sharp enough. Another thing, the lens was pretty heavy. At first I liked the way my tiny little D40 was kinda heavy, but as I write this review, my right wrist is in pain. If you have a D40,D40x,D60, or even the D5000 and you have this lens, I would recommend getting a battery pack to go with it to even out the weight. I'm sure I would have kept this lens if I didn't have that problem, but now it's going to be Nikon lenses. Good luck to you if you plan on purchasing this lens. Hopefully you don't get a bad copy like me.

Sigma 18-250mm for Nikon - 3 stars
The first thing I noticed is that the sigma is much heavier than other comparable lenses (like the Tamron). Nikon owners should know that the barrel is large enough that it will cast a shadow when using the popup flash on a D40 and it zooms with an opposite twist than the Nikon lenses. The zoom action is fairly stiff (hard to turn) and I didn't experience any lens creep unless I shook the camera fairly hard as it was pointing down.

Compared to Nikon 55-200mm VR: The Sigma lens focuses faster and quieter than the 55-200. It seems the OS is more effective as well. However, the Nikon image quality is far superior throughout the range. Chromatic aberrations from the Sigma are very noticeable compared to the Nikon. The Nikon seems a bit brighter. If you don't need the 18-55 range or macro, the Nikon is by far the better lens (and 1/2 the cost).

Compared to the Nikon 18-200mm VR: Sigma is quieter and heavier. Image quality of the Nikon is similar to the 18-105 (below). On image quality alone, Nikon wins here. On value - it is too close to call.

Compared to the Nikon 18-105mm VR: First impression is that the center sharpness is better on the Sigma from 18-35mm or so, but the Nikon is better from 55mm to 105mm. Both seem to focus at about the same speed, but the Nikon is a tad more accurate. Both are quiet and built solid - the sigma like a tank. Geometric distortions are similar. Chromatic aberrations may be a little worse on the Sigma (the Nikon isn't too good either), originally I called it a draw overall, but after shooting some more I found I rarely had sharp shots with the Sigma. I believe it is partially the focus compounded with the soft optics since static scenes were a little sharper. The Nikon is almost always spot on. Winner was clearly the Nikon. I'd change the Sigma rating to 3 stars... but Amazon doesn't allow it. I've sent the Sigma back.

All around winner for an all around lens.
I just recently bought this lens primarily for its Optical Stabilization technology.
My past lens the Sigma 28-300 was a great all around lens but it didn't have the image stabilization that this lens does. This lens with the range of 18-250 actually works better for an all around lens. I was a bit skeptical about the OS (IS Canon) technology but after using a Canon 70-200 2.8 IS. I couldn't go back to my sigma 28-300 without OS. I mean the difference was and is well worth the extra cost. I zoomed in all the way with the OS and without the OS on a rusted mailbox. The OS showed all the rust particles, the Non-OS showed blurred particles. That convinced me it was worth it. That extra crispness makes all the difference. Also, the price for this lens was outstanding when compared to the closest competition. I didn't really want the Tamron, and I wasn't about to pay 2,300 for the Canon 28-300 IS 3.5-5.6 that's nuts. Closer to 1,000 I might have. But this lens as far as I can tell is just as good as the Canon for a lot less expensive. I have NEVER and I repeat never had a problem with my previous Sigma lens. I had the 28-300 for about 3 or more years. And the image quality was always right up there with my Canon lens. I work with a 24-70 2.8L and a 70-200 2.8L IS, as well has 16-35 2.8L, my sigma photo quality kept up with if not is equal to them. Though the L series are built very heavy duty and are really great lens all around. The image quality is not all that superior if any. With the OS on this new lens the only advantage to a L series Canon would be the better build and better dust and weather resistance. But by all means the Sigma 18-250 is a all around winner for anyone wanted an all around lens.

Sigma 18-250 Canon Mount - good quality/price
I was hesitant when it came to this lens. I have had Sigma lenses for >10 yrs and liked them, but found little to know information about this lens and was leaning toward the Tamron 18-275. The Sigma was about less and I have never had trouble with my 3 other lenses. I even had Sigma replace one whose chip did not play well with my 20D, so I feel some loyalty to them. On preliminary use, it is about a pound and feels solid, and well made. Some complained about the mechanism being tight about half way from 18-250, I did not find it any more tight then my 28-70 or my 70-300 both by Sigma. The images are sharp generally except for the extremes on either end, so I will just avoid the very end of each side of the zoom range. I have not put the stabilization to the test yet, from what I can tell it does add about 2 stops and makes the hand held shots passable at longer focal lengths that would not have worked with out it. The other bonus is the rapid focus and quiet operation of the HSM.

The one trade off and the reason for 4 vs. 5 is the weight. I have an 18-200 that does not have stabilization and the images at full or near full zoom are not so crisp (not the fault of the lens, but my not so steady hands). I always keep a monopod with me to minimize the shake, but this is not so convenient, so theOS is the reason behind the new Sigma. I understand the trade off for sharp pictures is some extra mechanics, but, it Sigma is reading this, shedding a little weight in the next version will go a long way. My only other comment is the f6.3 make it a bit dark at the high end of the zoom, again, trade offs are needed. If you use this outside you should be fine, but inside at a school play you may still need the monopod (got mine from REI - it is walking stick that has a removable head where you can attach your camera for about ! REI Hiker Shock Light Staff) Over all I am very happy with another Sigma lens. and my next lens will be a 30 mm f1.4 prime sigma!

Follow up 30 May 2009 - I had some more time to use the lens and found the OS works very well. I will post some images, but hand held at 1/15 gives a nice crisp image at f5.6. I don't have the most steady hands in the world and these shots at 250 mm would never have been worth anything before the advent of OS for hand held shots. Other shots in the 18-80 range are nice and sharp from about f5.3 and up. Very happy and with 17th St. Photo as well, very fast shipping and easy to deal with. Great lens for the money
