    Digital SLR Lens -Customer Reviews

    Excellent all around Lens5
I was using Nikon 18-135mm with D80 for a year. I realized that if you zoom beyond 70mm and handhold the camera there will be some softness in the picture. In that case you definitely need image stabilization. I upgraded to this lens even though this lens is expensive. I am glad I did it. I am very happy with this lens. No creeping so for.
If you have DX format camera, all you need is this 18-200VR and 50mm F1.8 prime lens.

    WOW…What a lens!5
This Nikon lens does it all! What a great walk-a-round lens that could easily stay on my camera always!!! I will most likely use it for just that once I get my new Nikon D90.

Great lens with one major caveat4
I recently bought this lens with high hopes. I wanted to replace my Tamron 18-200 macro lens that I’ve dropped twice, and which now creeps terribly when pointed downward. Imagine my horror when I discovered this much vaunted Nikon lens does the same thing, brand new! A friend contacted Nikon, who told her that “excessive” creep can be adjusted somewhat, but the lens will always creep to some extent due to the way it’s made. So if you never want or need to shoot something below you, buy all means, buy this lens with confidence. Otherwise, caveat emptor!

  • The inner workings of the digital SLR rely on image sensors. These sensors capture the image by carrying electrostatic charges, which attract the dust, along with many airborne particles to these same sensors. Particular areas, such as dirt fields, beaches, or parks, have more dust than others.

We need to save our SLR from dust if we want to obtain consistent results, this is not an easy battle to win, because dust finds different ways to get inside our camera body and stick to the sensor. This happens especially when the lens is being replaced or it happens when the sensors get charged - drawing in the dust. Probably the easiest way to avoid dust is by changing the lens in a clean place with no dust - but it makes sense to not change the camera lens in a windy, dusty or sandy location.

It is much better to change them inside a closed room before leaving for a shoot. It can be determined if the camera is affected by dust in a simple manner. Shoot a picture of a clear blue sky or a smooth white surface, well lit. Shoot without a flash, such as f/16 or f/22; if the camera has a zoom lens, shoot the test shots at a wide angle. If the camera zooms in, the dust splotch will appear like a soft blob instead of a spot.

When taking pictures, try to hold the camera in a downward angle, while changing the lens to avoid dust from entering from above. Basically, the mirror fixed inside the SLR offers protection to the sensor from dust. The mirror/sensor chamber, which can accumulate dust, should therefore be kept clean to avoid dust from finding its way to the sensor. In case it is decided to change the lens in the field, try to find a sheltered location. Try to reduce the time the camera is kept open, by keeping the replacement lens ready for a swap.

Giotto’s Rocket Air Blower is a good product to keep for removing dust from the camera. Reviews have said it is light to carry, yet bulky. Other than that, it is a good product. It effectively cleans with just a puff or two, and is better to clean at home or the studio. Never clean the insides of your camera with compressed air stored inside an Aerosol can.

The propellant in the Aerosol can sometimes sprays a liquid that quickly evaporates leaving a residue behind on the surface of the sensor resulting in malfunctioning of the sensor. The air blowers work a lot better. The air blower is helpful when available within arm’s reach. It helps to eliminate massive dust in an easy manner, helping a few photographers, who use editing software to remove the particle from the pictures, keep their cameras clean.

Another way to avoid dust accumulation, in emergencies you can shoot with wide aperture openings. This reduces the camera’s depth of field and negatives the impact that dust may have on an image. However, this should not be made a practice as he dust, if it is allowed to accumulate on the sensor surface, will lower its sensitivity.

  • Here’s a great gadget for DSLR owners. Do you already own a Lensbaby for your DSLR camera? No….then please read on!

Do you know what a Lensbaby is used for? If not…read on. A Lensbaby is an amazing designed gadget used to create a sweet spot of focus, which leaves the balance of the scene, away from the central area as a mystical blurred effect.

Do you know what a Lensbaby looks like? If not…then read on. Crucially, a Lensbaby is a fifty millimetre lens, fixed to the front end of what resembles a section of pool cleaner rubber hose pipe. The other end of the tube section has a mounting assembly used to firmly attach the Lensbaby to the camera lens mounting assembly.

The stretchy “pipe section” facillitates a complete range of movement, both vertical and tilt, in any direction. Accordingly this is an essential camera gadget as the photographer can select the sweet spot precisely as desired. The balance of the photo blurs dreamily out of prime focus.

Accordingly the Lensbaby is such an creative gadget that I cant stop playing with the thing. To all extents, everything I view through the camera lens now has a totally different perspective and aspect. This includes everything from architechture scenes to portraits and ….well every scene you can imagine.

RRP in Australia at DVDreamtime is $249. I reckon the Lensbaby is worth every dollar if you are out to create creative photos into your DSLR photography.

  • In this age of the general purpose digital camera, the concept of focal length, lens aperture, focal ratios, and many other photographic technical terms have become somewhat obsolete for most digital camera users. One basis reason for this is the fact that most basic digital cameras used these days do not require such knowledge as the knowledge might not be able to be applied to a basic digital camera, let alone a digital phone camera.

The situation is very different for the serious amateur photographer. Specially those using digital single lens reflex cameras (from now on in this article shortened to DSLR). Serious starting out amateur photographers will need to understand such terms as focal length, aperture and focal ratio. Particularly they need to understand these terms in order to get the best results. Okay, what do these terms mean?

    - Focal length is simply the distance from the lens to the focal plane of the imager.

    - Aperture is the usable diameter of the lens opening.

You need to understand both terms…focal length and aperture as each has a relationship to the other. The relationship between focal length and aperture is referred to as the “focal ratio”. The “focal ratio” (f-number) is calculated by dividing the focal length of a lens by the camera lens aperture .

    Example:

The lens system of a camera has an aperture( usable diameter of the lens opening) of 50mm. The focal length of the lens is 500mm Therefore the focal ratio = 500/50 = 10. The focal ratio is generally written as f/10. e.g. the lens has a focal ratio of f/10

Now you understand how to calculate the focal ratio the next question should be “So what?”. Well, for the serious amateur photographer, particularly those using DSLR cameras, the “focal ratio” is essential knowledge due to a photographic concept referred to as “lens speed”.

Okay…what is meant by “lens speed” and why is it important?

The term lens speed refers to the “maximum aperture diameter”, or “minimum f-number”, of a photographic lens or lens system. When using a lens possessing a larger maximum aperture (that is, a smaller minimum f-number) the lens would be nominated as a fast lens. The reason being it delivers more light intensity (illuminance) to the focal or image plane, permitting a faster shutter speed. If the lens has a smaller maximum aperture (larger minimum f-number) then the lens would be classified as “slow” because it delivers less light intensity and needs a slower shutter speed.

Camera lenses are classified as “fast” or “slow” . This is vital information for photographers as the Llns speed given by the minimum f-number, or conversely maximum aperture diameter, or maximum numerical aperture, is a vital quantitative method in order to compare lenses.

Knowing the lens speed is essential information when photographing in dim light, and moreso when using long telephoto lenses. Being aware of lens speed is also particularly important in order to determine depth of field when undertaking portrait photography. Lens speed is a major variable in tandem with other photographic variables such as focal length and camera format size.

The photographer who understands these terms and knows how to apply them to their qw in varying photographic situations will produce excellent results.

  • With no longer any need for film, digital cameras have started a whole new era for photography. Unlike the conventional camera, it does not rely on mechanical and chemical processes. Since the images captured are in electronic form, this is a language recognized by computers. Images are stored in digital form using the term Pixels which is just a digital expression of images that are made up of ones and zeros.

Focusing light through a lens onto a suitable receptive surface is still common to both types of camera. However, it is how the digital camera captures the light that makes all the difference because it achieves this by using a special sensor as opposed to film. There are two methods of achieving this; one is more expensive than the other and called a CCD or charge coupled device. The CMOS device is used in cheaper cameras and does the same work as a CCD but it is doubtful that this system will replace those devices in the quality models.

The price has been depreciating recently and one of the main reasons for this is the introduction of CMOS image sensors; because CMOS sensors are less expensive and are easier to manufacture than CCD sensors. Whilst both the CMOS and CCD systems both capture an image using millions of solar cells to make up the whole picture, they perform this in slightly different ways Information to help you choose a suitable model of camera is mention in this review. Image quality is important or it will be waste of time taking them so look for the highest megapixel model within your price range; the higher the resolution of the camera the bigger the photos that can be printed.

Many people rave about a digital cameras zoom power but the image is being artificially magnified so always try for an optical zoom even if it is one with only a low magnifying power; perhaps you can remember how grainy and blurred images become when you used your camcorder’s digital zoom function? Rechargeable batteries can be charged up to a thousand times and save money, do you need any other advice for why they are best? If it is possible, try to buy a model with many functions as you will be able to create some stunning effects; examples are listed below:

Video capture Web cam function Negative image

If you’re a photo freak, be sure that you have enough memory to take plenty of shots without worrying about storage. Although larger storage cards have plummeted in price, a 1GB card should be enough for most peoples needs; some cameras won’t accept very high capacity cards anyway.

Cameras are now very tiny compared to a few years ago so you can actually carry around a high specification variant in your pocket and still be able to take fantastic pictures. Professional photographers may need heavy, bulky equipment but there is no requirement for a keen amateur to do so! There has only been room for a few basic hints and tips here but they should help with your choice of camera. The digital camera has reinvented photography for the masses and this is a trend that looks set to continue. • The Canon EOS 40D Digital SLR offers two configurations: the body only and a kit with a 3.5-5.6, 28mm to 145 mm IS USM lens. The camera’s 1.6x focal-length multiplier adds an angle of view equivalent to that of a 44.8mm- 216 mm lens on a 35 mm camera.

The Canon EOS 40D Digital SLR features a larger LCD monitor at 3inches and the body size of the camera is 4.2×5.7×2.9 inches. The weight of the camera is about 1.8 pounds. The body feels very solid and well made. Dust and weatherproofing technologies are also added to this camera. This camera also features an integrated sensor-cleaning system that’s similar to the Mark III series of camera’s. A Dust Delete Data option enables the camera to fully analyze and remember where the dust is places to algorithmically remove it from each individual picture.

The larger LCD offers a variety of advantages. The Jump, Review, Delete and New Picture Styles buttons are located just below the LCD rather than to the side, making the buttons a bit smaller than with previous models. The only disadvantage to this is that to some, they may be harder to use and press. The Metering/WB, ISO/Flash compensation, AF/Drive and LCD backlight buttons are also a bit difficult to differentiate, due to size.

On the positive side, the 40D has bigger, more tactile dial modes, with three slots for user settings. The grip of the camera has also been redesigned, adding curved indentation, making it easy to touch with your middle finger white shooting. The menu system has also been redesigned, making it much easier to read and navigate.

New features has also been included, like the Live View mode, which features a better, more flexible implementation of functions. With this camera, pictures show excellent dynamic range, with no visible clipping in the highlights or shadows.

The Canon 40D is a great camera overall and will remain an excellent choice compared to other dSLR’s in and around it’s price class. The Canon EOS 40D Digital SLR ultimately delivers better photo quality than it’s competitors.

The good: Superior shooting quality and speed amongst other Dslr’s, this camera offers first-rate photo quality.

The bad? The spot size for spot meter is rather large and relatively sluggish in low-light focus situations.

Overall, the 40D offers great photo quality and excellent continuous-shooting performance. At 10.1 mega pixels and a price tag of $1,099, this camera is a great value for such a highly advanced professional camera.
